Cultural Experience - the Aboriginal People

The 21st Commonwealth Games are being held on the Gold Coast of Australia in 2018. It is pretty amazing that they happen to be here in Australia this year! The Gold Coast is about an hour drive south of Brisbane. The Commonwealth Games are similar to the Olympics in that they happen every 4 years but only in Commonwealth countries (associated with the Queen of England) and only summer sports. Being from America we had never heard of them before, but it has been so fun to watch them, supporting and learning about the Aussie athletes. A couple of the venues are here in Brisbane and there is a whole venue set up very close to our apartment, in front of the Brisbane wheel. They show the games live on a giant TV all day and then at night there is live music and performances. We attended a cultural presentation about the Aboriginal people (the indigenous people to Australia, similar to our Native Americans). It was SO fascinating and we learned a lot. The kids LOVED it. It was so neat to hear a didgeridoo live and watch the dancing. The setting was beautiful with the city of Brisbane behind and a beautiful rainbow!!

This is what "Meeanjin" means.

After the Aboriginal performance the kids wanted to climb on the giant letters that spell BRISBANE. At some point I am hoping to get a family picture in front of the letters, but tonight wasn't the right night since there were so many people.

After the performance we decided to eat dinner. Here we are waiting for Daddy to arrive.
We had to wait a very long time for our food.
Rylie and Matt were taking silly pictures together.
