The meaning behind the name

Rylie Elizabeth Buman

Matt and I like names with meanings. In choosing a name for our baby girl we wanted something that she would live into, just like with Derek's name (meaning is gifted leader). Early on in our name picking I had suggested the name Rylie. It wasn't Matt's top choice, so we put it aside and continued looking for other names, but we kept coming back to the name. Finally, I looked up the meaning of the name Rylie and then we both knew that this was the perfect name for our baby girl.

Rylie means valiant and courageous. We are thrilled God has blessed us with a baby girl to raise up to know and love God. We will strive to help her live into her name, as one who is brave and shows courage and determination, standing up for what is right and good.

Elizabeth is the middle name we chose because we both liked that name. We did not want it to be her first name because we did not like any of the nicknames that came with it. After deciding on it as her middle name we asked our families for a list of female family names and sure enough Elizabeth was a family name on both sides. My Great Aunt Constance's middle name was Elizabeth and a relative on Matt's side of the family also had Elizabeth as a middle name. This was just a confirmation from God that we had chosen the right name for our girl.

We are grateful for Rylie Elizabeth and excited to see what God has in store for her life!
Rylie's 2nd Week
At Rylie's 2 week weight check she weighed 7 lbs 7 oz meaning she gained 9 oz in 1 week! I am so thankful that breastfeeding this time around has been a breeze!! She has been sleeping 2 - 3 hour stretches at night and for that I am grateful. She seems to have a few fussy hours each night around 7:30 (thankfully just after Derek goes to bed). We have been swaddling her and rocking her to calm her down. I am looking forward to when this stage passes, but glad that Matt is home at this time to hold her so I can get a break. For the most part she is a very content baby and will sleep through anything! She sleeps in the Pack 'n Play, bouncer and car seat most often during the day and has been sleeping in her crib at night since her 3rd day home from the hospital. We love our baby girl!!

Adjusting to Life with 2 kids
I know that Rylie is only 2.5 weeks old, but it sure is hard to get the timing of things together to get both kids out the door. I am used to picking up at a moments notice and going somewhere with Derek (without much in the diaper bag). Its hard to get used to a new way of doing things. It seems like it takes hours to just to get both kids into the car. I am ready to get out of the house and back to our normal routine, but it is challenging and most of the time overwhelming to think about all that needs to be done before we can leave. I know that it will get easier as time goes on and I will get a routine but right now that seems way down the road.

This afternoon we tried to head to Target to run a quick errand. I got Rylie in her car seat and Matt was getting Derek ready when Rylie burped and spit up. Then she needed to be fed...which meant at least 40 minutes before we could leave the house. At this point it was too late to go to Target because we wouldn't be home in time for dinner and that would create chaos for the entire evening. So...we scraped Target, I nursed Rylie, and Matt and Derek walked to the mailbox to get the mail. I was disappointed because I had wanted to get out of the house. At that moment it seemed like getting out of the house was impossible!! I know things will get easier, but I was just frustrated. Instead of going to Target we ate an early and relaxing dinner outside as a family. And to top it off a hot air balloon passed right over our house. Derek was so excited to see the hot air balloon. He loves "hah bahs" as he calls hot air balloons. I am grateful that God blessed us with a wonderful evening as a family.

On another note, this week Derek's afternoon nap has coincided with one of Rylie's nap too! Since we've had help for the past 3 weeks, I have been able to take a 1 hour nap each day too! For this I am grateful.

Thanks Pops!
Pops came to spend a week with us after Grammy and Auntie K left. We were very happy to have him as Matt traveled to D.C. for a conference. It was nice to have some help while he was gone. We are so thankful for all the help we have had. Derek had so much fun with "Pa" (as he calls him). It was so cute to watch them play together.

A Visit From Auntie K
We are so thankful that Auntie K could come and spend a week with us after Rylie was born. We were truly blessed by her as she loved on our family. It was such a memorable week for us (our first week home from the hospital as a family of 4)! She watched Derek so Matt and I could go on our first date and also watched Rylie so we could take Derek for a special morning just with Mommy and Daddy (no Rylie). She would sit and hold Rylie while I got to take an afternoon nap!! I loved all the times we got to talk and catch up on life. We LOVE you Kristin!
One afternoon Matt took Derek on an afternoon run and Kristin went on her own run. Their runs were cut short as it started to hail in Arizona (yes hail folks). It was crazy.
Here is Auntie K holding the hail. Derek thought it was so funny.
Mommy Moment
On Saturday Derek woke up with his first bad cold...bad enough that he woke up screaming. He was congested and had a wet cough. This was the first time where we could see that he was miserable. He sat on the couch most of the day and watched Thomas the Train and Curious George episodes we had taped. He woke up an hour into his nap and I looked on the video monitor and he was sitting up on his bed crying his eyes out. Again, a first. Usually, if he wakes up in the middle of a nap he will put himself back to sleep. So, I went in and picked up Derek (I had just been cleared by my doctor to hold him after having my c-section 2 weeks prior). He sobbed and sobbed on my shoulder as I held him. After about 30 minutes he calmed down and I went downstairs hoping that Matt or Pops would be able to hold him, but Derek wanted nothing to do with them and got all worked up when I tried to have them hold him. He ONLY wanted me!! This was very flattering and made me feel so loved, but turned out to be hilarious. Shortly after calming him down, Rylie needed to nurse. So there I was with Derek on my lap and nursing Rylie, while Matt and Pops were relaxing on the couch watching TV. Ha Ha...a Mommy moment that I do not want to forget! I LOVED that Derek only wanted Mommy to hold and comfort him.

More hospital pictures
Our first picture as a family of 4 picture (2 hours after surgery)!!
LOVE this shirt. It fits Derek perfectly!! The car & ramp toy in the background is the gift Rylie gave Derek. It was the best idea to bring it to the hospital. Derek loved coming to visit and the toy kept him entertained after the initial excitement of meeting Rylie wore off.

Thanks Grammy!
We are very thankful that Grammy could come out and take care of Derek while Matt and I were in the hospital with Rylie. Derek had so much fun with "Gigi" (as he calls her). It was nice to know he was taken care of. I did not worry about him once while we were in the hospital.
We are also thankful that Grammy was willing to spend a night with me in the hospital. On our last night in the hospital, Matt didn't feel so good and we decided it was best for him to go home. So, Grammy and Matt switched places. It was so nice to have Grammy with me. She was fresh (had gotten great sleep) and was willing to sit up and hold Rylie all night so I could get some sleep. Thanks Grammy for blessing our family and helping us welcome Baby Rylie home!

Rylie's 1st week
Rylie is such a sweet and content baby!! All she does is sleep and eat and poop!! It is so funny to have a newborn again after so long. Derek seems SO HUGE compared to her. It is so weird to change Rylie's diaper and then Derek's diaper. The difference in size and abilities is just unbelievable. We are very grateful that Derek has adjusted so well to his baby sister. He gives her gentle kisses often and loves to watch her. He gets very concerned when she cries. He is also very good at letting us know when he wants to play with either Matt or myself and who should hold baby Rylie. I am thankful that he can communicate this. It has been so amazing to have Grammy and Auntie K here for the first 2 weeks of Rylie's life. The adjustment has been very smooth, except for the lack of sleep!
Rylie's first week home was busy. We had visits from Grammy, Auntie K, Uncle Kevin and Aunt Valeri, Eric and Andrea and several neighbors. We went to Derek's swim lessons, the park, hiking, and several errands. Unlike when Derek was born we took things easy...we have been on the go ever since Rylie was born. Its not easy to sit at home with an active 21 month old.
A few details I want to remember - Week 1 well check stats: 6lbs 14oz (18%), head circumference (8%), height (82%). Rylie definitely has Mommy's long torso. While in the hospital, Rylie's weight dropped from 7lb (at birth) to 6lb 5 oz after passing 5 meconium stools on day 2. But by her week 1 well check her weight was back up only 2 oz shy of her birth weight.
Rylie's first trip out of the house was to the park. Here is Big brother Derek so excited to get out of the house and back to our routine!
Using the double BOB with both kids.
We tried to make sure that Derek had some special activities to keep him busy. Daddy took Derek to the zoo, the train park and to his first Padres game!!

Hiking Dreamy Draw - Auntie K held Rylie in the Ergo since I had not had my 2 week check up yet. Derek LOVES to ride in the back pack on Daddy's back and really LOVES to hike.

Matt and I took Derek out for a fun afternoon of just Mommy and Daddy time. We went to the park and then got Derek his first ice cream cone!! It was great to spend time just the 3 of us.
I made Rylie a carrot cake to celebrate her first week of life.
