While we were in Australia our friends from our old church in Redwood City, CA (Peninsula Covenant Church) visited us. They were staying with friends in Geelong, not too far from us. They were able to spend a couple days with us before spending 2 days in the CBD of Melbourne. Julie and Matt both worked at Stanford. Julie had Josie about 3 months before Derek was born and before we moved to AZ we used to have play dates with the kids. It had been 6 1/2 years since we've seen each other, but we picked up just like old times. Our kids had a blast playing together. It was so beautiful to see them play. Derek and Rylie loved Josie. Julie and I chatted for hours. Finally, we got the kids ready for the beach and checking out St. Kilda.
Walking to the beach....hand in hand! The kids LOVED having Josie visit. Even though they had never hung out with her (not that Derek remembers play dates at 11 months old) it seemed like they were the best of friends!!
We made sure to show them the iconic Luna Park.
It was perfect weather for the beach! The kids built sand castles and we threw
Derek's new water ball around for hours.
After the beach we met up with Matt for dinner in St. Kilda. Then we headed to the St. Kilda pier to show Josie and Julie the fairy penguin colony and the Melbourne skyline.
Julie and I with the Melbourne skyline in the background. Only God would've planned that after 6.5 years we would meet up in Melbourne, Australia.
The next day we joined Josie, Julie and Eric exploring the Melbourne Zoo. It was so fun to feel like a regular in Australia and show our friends the ropes. Derek loved to explain how the Myki card and the tram works.
Derek and Rylie loved riding the tram with Josie!
lunchtime break eating next to the giraffes
wombat statue
butterfly garden
Icy treat in the afternoon as it was getting hot!
This one orangutan LOVED Derek. When Derek smiled at him the orangutan smiled back. The orangutan kept looking at Rylie and then at Derek, right into their eyes. It was hilarious.
The kids had so much fun on the tram ride home...laughing and playing games. What a fun day!
