Helping out Dad
The other morning as Matt was getting ready to leave for work, Derek decided to help carry Matt's laptop bag. It was so cute to see him lift it with all his might! Derek sure does LOVE his daddy!

Playdate with Josie and Julie
Josie and Julie stopped by for one last playdate. Derek was SO happy to play with Josie. It was so cute to see them talk to each other. They played with the Cozy Coupe the whole time and Julie and I worked on helping them take turns!! Derek and I will miss them! Here are some sweet pictures from the playdate.

Derek wanted to push Josie around, but Josie wanted to do it herself. It was so cute to hear Josie tell Derek "No thank you."

It was pouring outside and Derek loved standing at the door and watching the rain.
This is the best we could do to get a picture of the 2 of them together.

So Proud...

Derek had just stacked all the colored circles for the first time when he looked up with this smile! He was so proud of himself. Priceless!

12 Month Well Check
It was so momentous to visit the doctor for Derek's 12 month well check. I have been excited about it for a long time. I remember the very first time we went in to see Dr. Glinder when Derek was just born. He told us that Derek needed to gain weight faster to fit his height and build and he advised us to supplement with formula. After getting over that initial shock and realizing that was the best thing for Derek, we have been so thankful for Dr. Glinder. His relaxed personality has given me the ability to feel freedom in parenting (learning that there is not one right way to parent!). I love how God always knows exactly what we need ahead of time and how His plan is always sovereign.

Weight: 22 lbs and 11oz (49%)
Height:  30 1/2" (66%)
Since this was our last appointment with Dr. Glinder we took a few pictures. Here is Derek checking out Dr. Glinder's stethoscope and otoscope (thing with light on end to look in ear).
Here are some pictures of Derek playing while we waited for his appointment.
I love the sequence of these pictures.

First Family 10K Race
Matt and I have always been runners. Our relationship began as we chatted during early morning runs over 10 years ago and we've been running together every since. When Derek was born we had to get creative on how to go on runs together. We thought that a great way to celebrate Derek turning one and us moving, was to run a race together. It was a bit more challenging to find a race that allowed strollers. We chose the Packard Summer Scamper, with a course that was on Stanford's campus. It was the perfect way to end our time here in CA as we've spent lots of time memorable time on campus and its so beautiful. The race was awesome...but it was definitely hard  to get used to weaving in and out of people with a stroller. Once the 5K people finished we were in our groove and cruised through the last 3 miles. Derek did awesome during the race. He loved seeing all the people, fountains, and of course eating his Cheerios. We finished in 58 minutes and were pretty proud. Way to go Buman Family! Now to plan our next race!!

Happy Father's Day Matt!
Matt, Derek and I are so blessed by you and want you to know how important you are to us. You are a dedicated husband and Dad. It is obvious that you LOVE our family. It shows in all the big and little ways was you sacrifice for us. I love watching your passion for your career continue to grow. Derek is such a blessed boy to have you to look up to. I love the way he gets so excited when you come home from work or stop home for a surprise visit. I love how he will sit and read with him before bedtime. We love and appreciate you. Thanks for being you!
For Matt's Father's Day gift from Derek I framed 3 5x7 photos for his office. My Father's Day gift will be a new grill when we move to AZ.

Outtakes from our photo shoots....I could not have taken all the photos without Ellen. She did a great job of getting Derek to smile.
We had Father's Day dinner at the Counter...one of our favorite restaurants.
After dinner we enjoyed playing in the field behind our house. Derek LOVED chasing after this ball.

So sweet...Matt pointing out an airplane to Derek. (Derek's favorite!)
AZ House Hunting Trip
The week before Derek's 1st birthday we took a house hunting trip to AZ. We were so blessed that Auntie K was able to come along with us and watch Derek so Matt and I could focus on house hunting. When we left for the trip, we had really thought we would just rent for a while, but God had other plans for us. Between our two trips to Arizona (3 days in April and this week in June), we had looked at about 100 homes in the Phoenix area. We had prayed that if God wanted us to buy that He would make it abundantly clear to us...and HE did!! He orchestrated everything and we are currently under agreement on a house! God answered our prayers and has blessed us abundantly MORE than we could have ever thought or prayed for.

During the week we were in AZ Derek took off with his walking. He began the week taking 5 - 8 steps at a time (which he had been doing for the past month) and by the end of the week he was taking 15 - 20 steps. It was so fun to see him walking everywhere by himself. He walks with his arms out in front of him like Frankenstein.

Besides looking at homes during our week, we spent lots of time at the pool and water fountains.
Eating breakfast with Auntie K!
One night we ate dinner by the pool and Auntie K had her  first cheeseburger!
Frozen yogurt and trying to get a picture with a 2 second timer!

When we took Derek to get a haircut, they had him sit in a car. He love it, but had a little bit of trouble sitting still. By the end of the haircut we were trying everything Auntie K even got out the bubbles.

Some favorites from the week...

We love Auntie K and could not have done this trip without her! Thanks for loving Derek and investing in his life. We are grateful.

Happy 1st Birthday Derek!
It is hard to believe that we are already at Derek's first birthday. This year has just flown by. We have loved watching our sweet boy go from a baby to a toddler. Derek is such a happy boy, always smiling and loves people. It has been such a joy filled year. Our hearts are overflowing with thankfulness for all that this year has brought. We celebrated Derek's birthday on the actual day (June 12th) with a party at Nealon Park, in Menlo Park. Nealon Park is the park right behind our house, which we play at everyday.
I made carrot cake cupcakes for the guests and a special mini carrot cake just for Derek. We put Derek's cake on a traditional special plate that Matt had in his family. Derek was not interested in his cake. He took a few licks of frosting, but really did not "dig" into the cake the way Matt and I had thought he would. In addition, I made chocolate candy as party favors in honor of my Great Aunt Flo Flo.
I was definitely more excited for Derek to eat his cake than he was.

I love Derek's face in this picture...
Here are some of our guests...Auntie K and Sue
Trinity Friends - Jennie, Genevieve and Ana
Ana, Vanessa and Mariana
PCC friends - Rachel, Janet, Matt and Bethany, Heather
Stanford friends - Mary, Eric and Andrea, Sandi and Trevor
Pops and Grammy gave Derek the Cozy Coupe. Derek helped Matt put it together the night before his birthday. It was the sweetest thing to watch Derek help Matt. Derek loves playing with his new Cozy Coupe. He climbs in and out of it and pushes it all over the house.
Grandma and Grandpa Buman gave Derek this wooden train that they got when they were in Italy.
